Camille Charrière
In 1952, Gaby Aghion, an Egyptian-born Parisienne and a bohemian spirit founded Chloe. Rejecting the stiff formality of 50s fashion, she created soft, body-conscious fashion from fine fabrics and dubbed it «luxury pret-a-porter. » From the beginning, Chloe has stayed in sync with the youthful, modern, and slightly audacious mood of Paris by hiring and developing new, young talents, to design the collections.

Clare Waight-Keller was named creative director of Chloé in May 2011, replacing Hannah MacGibbon. Her romantic yet mature designs manage to be true to the house’s codes whilst remaining current, and have brought a new sense of vitality to the Parisian house, not seen since Pheobe Philo was creative director. Clare’s success stems from her deep appreciation of what makes the Chloé brand resonate with its buyers, saying, “I love the fact that [Chloé] was started by a woman, and I love the fact that it speaks to women, it’s not a conceptual brand. It’s much more sensitive. It’s intuitive to women.”

As for the SS15 collection, and as Waight Keller herself put it: «The starting point was fabrics that tell stories, particularly ‘folkloric’ textiles like the encrusted birds in cheesecloth, but I wanted honest, direct shapes. I liked the idea of denim, that it can be used raw or washed and it becomes personal to the wearer—it is immediate and honest. I wanted to have an idea of workwear as well as the flou, which was about volume and expanded from that densely packed fabric, crepon georgette. I wanted that one amazing shape that just hung off thin spaghetti straps.»
