Meet Letizia, Queen of Spain: could she be the next royal fashion icon?
Next thursday Princess Letizia will take over for Sofia, who has held the title since 1975, joining Kate Middleton as a commoner who married into the royal family. In addition to being the first commoner to ascend the Spanish throne (technically she’s staying queen consort), Letizia will also be the first divorcee to wear the crown.
Letizia tries to bring some normalcy and middle-class enjoyment into her royal schedule: she enjoys outings to the cinema, indie music concerts (she goes with friends but arrives after the event has started for security reasons) and goes shopping in jeans buying her own clothes from Zara and Mango. She has a mortgage on an apartment, drives her own car and may be the only royal to have traveled on the subway.
Princess Letizia, who had some plastic surgery on her right before marrying Prince Felipez, is renowned for her relaxed, modest and down-to-earth sense of fashion. She looks equally comfortable in casual clothes (she loves wearing pantsuits and trenchs) and ball gowns. Her wedding dress featured a train over 13 feet long and a tiara previously worn by mother-in-law Queen Sophia in her wedding. Accustomed to the camera from her previous television journalist career, the soon-to-be queen favors the photogenic outfits designed by her favourite spanish designer: Felipe Varela.
